Fitzroy, Melbourne

Fitzroy is an older neighborhood not too far from downtown Melbourne. I believe it was Kevin Jackman who pointed us in the direction of Fitzroy to find accommodation for a few days. Most buildings are from the late 1800’s. The streets and shops are a bit like Inglewood of old or Kensington, but a few kilometers' worth. We were well entertained! The Rainbow Hotel around the corner from our condo block turned out to be a famous watering hole with frequent live entertainment, an energetic local following and a menu with multiple Vegan options. A short block away is a rooftop pub named “Naked for Satan”, also a hopping place with great beer and food. You can look up its history if you like, suffice to say we were able to eat and guzzle a pint with our clothes on.

Our Air B&B was great, although I’m still not capable of understanding those all-in-one washer-dryers. If you are building a utility room and have a cubic foot of room left over these machines are great for filling that void. The settings for drying assume your IQ is in the low double digits and you do not possess the mental capacity to interrupt the drying cycle for any reason before it’s cycle timing is complete. You can choose either two hours or 2-1/2 hours after which it will eventually allow you to open and experience the surprise ending. Your clothes will either still be steaming and completely wet or will have been reduced to their final carbon footprint. Either way you can buy new clothes and dry yourself with conveniently pre-moistened towels. Across from our condo was an urban dairy distribution facility. A shoulder-height barndoor (with buzzer beside) served as a street sales outlet for dairy products. Apparently the business was established 100 years ago and they’ve been milking it ever since.

Final survey says: Fitzroy is a fantastic neighborhood in which to stay. Go to the pub and forget about doing laundry.

Street art somewhere in Melbourne. No alley is left untouched.

Thanks for my morning chuckle here in Bath (the City not in the toilet). Off to Laura and Nigel’s tomorrow. I still can’t walk much but Nigel has made an appointment at an osteopath for me so hopefully I will improv.
